Junior/Apprentice DevOps Engineer
Location: The Elbow Rooms, 64 Call Lane, Leeds, LS1 6DT, Partially Remote
Salary: £18,000 – £22,000
This is a junior role that we will provide a lot of training in. Don’t worry if you don’t tick every single box and don’t look at the list of requirements as an absolute must. If you’re passionate about tinkering with bits of the internet and get kicks out of looking under the hood and figuring out how computers work you’re already most of the way there to landing this job.
What you’ll be doing
As the team at Parallax grows, and we take on more work, we’re looking for someone to help take some pressure off the currently two-strong DevOps team.
We currently host over 200 projects, with some living on S3, some on Kubernetes, and some on Serverless. We also help other clients manage their hosting, as well as developing/maintaining a few open source projects which aid our deployment process.
Day to day, your job will mostly be focused around supporting the development team deploying their projects to our infrastructure, that could be setting up build plans, pointing in the right direction of documentation, or sorting a new solution to fit the project’s requirements.
Working in a smaller team, you’ll get a big influence on how we approach certain projects, and with biweekly 1:1s and a big focus on progression, you’re likely to move forward in your role at a quick pace.
Things you’ll be learning
At first, you’ll mainly be learning how our deployment process/infrastructure works on a higher level. This’ll include configuring new and existing build plans, managing our PHP based build tools, and getting a grasp on how our different stacks work and each of their use cases.
Alongside this, you’ll start building a good understanding of how all the core AWS services underneath Kubernetes/Serverless work together to deliver our infrastructure – and hopefully get your AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate certificate off the back of that.
Things that’d be helpful to know at a basic level or have an interest in
- Amazon Web Services
- Bash / Linux
- Coding (Bonus points for PHP!)
- Source control (Git)
- Networking (Port forwarding, subnets, routing)
Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with everything here, we’re looking more at your interest and ability to learn than what you know now – as mentioned above, there’s going to be a lot of training provided!
